Water tank stories

Here we tell the stories of three families who have received a water tank from our charity.

The charity has provided and installed over 160 water tanks to families, schools and community gardens. Each has been donated by our supporters – the donated sum for one water tank, fully installed, being £500.

Without a means of rainwater storage, water is collected by women and children from boreholes, or from watering holes often several kilometres distant.

Our water tanks have transformed the lives of families in the Ingwavuma area.

The ongoing support through regular donations is vital to ensure we continue to provide water tanks to families in the region.

FAMILIES THAT HAVE BEEN HELPED

We have received very moving feedback from many of the recipients. Here are just three of their stories, read them all by clicking on each picture.

Family 1

This lady, aged 42, lives with ten children. Five of her children are at high school, and one in primary education. The other four stay at home as they didn’t get good grades in their Matric.

Life was difficult for her before receiving the water tank as there was no clean water at or near her home. She didn’t have enough money to buy water from the local shop as every penny was used to support her children.

The closest borehole water source was 30km (19 miles) away so she would make the journey there at the weekend with the help of two of her daughters.

There is a dam a few kilometers away from Samkhelisiwe house. She used to get water for washing from here and sometimes drinking if needed. The challenge was that the dam water wasn’t clean as cattle also drink from it and the water was very dirty. This sadly has been her family’s way of life for the past few years.

Having a water tank installed at her house now means that she and her family can drink clean water and no longer need to travel to fetch water.

This lady would like to say thank you so much to the donor. Water is life to everyone. She wishes to express her gratitude and how relieved she is for receiving a water tank.

She and all her children are very happy. With clean water, they now feel like the royal family.

Family 2

This 36 year-old is living with a family of nine people in Esihlangwini. Four of them are adults, three are in primary school and there are two young ones below the age of 5 years.

Life was tough without enough water at the house. The closest river was 20km (13 miles). We would go the river at 2am so as to be first to get water. We would sit and wait until all the 25litre containers were full. The water was not clean for home consumption – cooking or drinking.

Having young children at home was a challenge for us as we were forced to get clean water for them so as to protect them from contracting diseases. For us to get clean water we would pay R6 (30 pence) for 20litres, which was not easy and we could not afford to spare such an amount.  The closest borehole was 35km (22 miles) away. We would go there at weekends to do our laundry.

When I received a message from Fancy Stitch that someone has gifted me with a water tank I cried with joy as I could see that all the water challenges we were facing have been solved.

My life has changed completely. ‘Sengiwu muntu phakathi kwabantu empakhathini,’ meaning I am now a person amongst other people in the community. We can now stitch and submit work on time without stressing on how or where we will get water. Thank you so much for this gift.

Family 3

This lady is 45years old and she stays in Mambuzikazi with a family of nine. There are seven adults and two grandchildren.

I would like to say thank you so much for this gift. Before getting the water tank water was a challenge in the house. We would travel 25km (16 miles) to go the borehole. Sometimes we will get there early and you would only get one 25litre container of water for the family to use for drinking, washing and cooking.

I also had a small garden on the backyard but it was difficult to get it going because water was not easily accessible.

The water tank has made huge difference to my family and myself. We can now fill up the water tank and use some of the water to water the garden. We now have access to very clean water for cooking and drinking. To have water right next to you is a relief and of great value. Thank you so much for the water tank, much appreciation.
